About the Film

One of the film’s success stories, Marc Ramirez, taking a walk with his wife, Kim.

Type 2 diabetes affects millions of people worldwide, and for most, the diagnosis comes with a daunting expectation: this will only get worse. More medications, more complications, and a slow decline that feels inevitable.

Reversing Diabetes tells a different story.

Through success stories and insights from leading physicians and researchers, the film challenges the idea that type 2 diabetes is inevitably progressive and explores nutrition as a powerful, evidence-based tool for improving health. Grounded in decades of medical research, it offers a hopeful, science-backed look at how food can help change the course of a chronic disease.

What Does “Reversing” Mean?

Diabetes reversal means bringing blood sugar from diabetic levels back into the normal range by addressing the root problem: insulin resistance. For some people, that means maintaining healthy blood sugar without medication. For others, especially those who have lived with diabetes for many years, it may mean major improvements that take more time and work alongside their treatment plan.

The Science Behind the Story

Many people assume type 2 diabetes is simply a matter of eating too much sugar. The science points in a different direction.

At the heart of the disease is insulin resistance, when the body can’t use insulin properly to move sugar out of the blood and into the cells that need it. The film explains one of the key drivers: fat building up inside muscle and liver cells, where it interferes with insulin signaling.

The encouraging news is that this process can be addressed. Reversing Diabetes shows how a change in diet, built around everyday foods like whole grains, beans, vegetables, and fruit, can reduce this fat and help insulin work the way it should. Insulin sensitivity can begin improving within weeks, and clinical research has shown this approach can lower blood sugar and help many people reduce their need for medication.

The Stories

Whether recently diagnosed, living with diabetes for years, or worried about a family history of the disease, their stories show the challenges, the changes, and what can happen when food becomes part of the treatment.

The Experts

The film brings together renowned physicians and researchers whose work has helped shape our understanding of diet and chronic disease:

Dr. Neal Barnard, president of the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine and author of numerous studies and books on nutrition and diabetes

Dr. Dean Ornish, founder of the Preventive Medicine Research Institute, known for his research on lifestyle medicine and heart disease

Dr. Kim Williams, cardiologist and past president of the American College of Cardiology

Dr. Kitt Petersen, Yale School of Medicine researcher whose work focuses on the role of fat in muscle and liver cells in insulin resistance

Dr. Hana Kahleova, director of clinical research at the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine

They’re joined by other physicians, researchers, and health professionals whose work is changing how we think about diabetes.
