Soda Consumption Declines in U.S.

Consumption of sodas and other sugar-sweetened beverages fell among children and adults in the U.S. between 2003 and 2014, according to a study published in Obesity. Researchers tracked dietary data for 18,600 children and 27,652 adults and measured sugar-sweetened beverage consumption. The percentage of children and adults who drank sugary drinks on any given day, including sodas and milk, fell to 60.7 percent and 50 percent from 79.7 percent and 61.5 percent, respectively. The authors caution that consumption remains high among adolescents and young adults and Mexican-American and African-American populations, all of whom are at an elevated risk for obesity.
