Poultry Is Major Source of Urinary Tract Infection
Urinary tract infections (UTIs), the most common form of bacterial infection, are commonly caused by meat-borne bacteria, according to new research out of Southern California. Scientists collected and compared E. coli samples from 23,483 UTI patients and 12,616 E. coli samples from raw chicken, turkey, pork, and beef from grocery stores. They found that 18% of the infections were clearly linked to animal sources, primarily poultry. People living in high-poverty areas had an even higher risk of meat-borne UTIs.
