4 Ways to Help Pigs

It’s National Pig Day! Smarter than dogs, these highly social and intelligent animals could use your help! Here are four ways you can help pigs:

1. Urge medical training programs to switch to simulation!

Visit our Action Alerts page to urge universities and hospitals to stop using live pigs in doctor training. There are far better training methods available that are animal-free! In fact, 99% of Advanced Trauma Life Support courses, 97% of emergency medicine programs, and three-quarters of surgery residencies surveyed do not use animals for training at all!

2. Break up with bacon!

Do your body right by breaking up with bacon! Try our recipe for a Bacon, Sprout, and Tomato Sandwich.

Processed meat—from hot dogs to bacon—increases the risk of colorectal cancer, cardiovascular disease, and even early death. The World Health Organization has determined that processed meat is a major contributor to colorectal cancer, classifying it as “carcinogenic to humans.” Just a few strips of bacon consumed daily increases cancer risk by 18 percent.

3. Tell Congress to STOP using minipigs in drug testing!

A growing number of pigs, including adorable minipigs, are used in medical research and drug testing. Write to your representative TODAY to ensure that the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and Federal Drug Administration (FDA) end animal research and testing, replacing it with nonanimal and human-relevant methods instead.

Results from animal tests are often not relevant to human health, due to the significant differences across species. Additionally, tests using animals take much longer to conduct than most nonanimal methods, so new, more reliable methods will allow for the introduction of safe medications on a faster timeline and will help rule out dangerous ones earlier.
