Obesity and Processed Meats Linked to Cancer

The World Cancer Research Fund (WCRF) and the American Institute for Cancer Research (AICR) released recommendations to limit processed meat intake and increase plant-based foods as part of their Third Expert Report, Diet, Nutrition, Physical Activity and Cancer: a Global Perspective. Findings link excess body fat to heart disease and several forms of cancer due to increased inflammation and increased hormone production. In addition, saturated fats, animal protein, iron, and carcinogenic compounds found in processed meat promote cancer cell growth. The report recommends centering your diet on whole grains, vegetables, fruit, and legumes, as these foods decrease risk for many metabolic conditions.
