American Cancer Society Calls for More Plants, Less Red and Processed Meat

The American Cancer Society’s Diet and Physical Activity Guideline, published today, calls for increasing plant-based foods and excluding or limiting red and processed meat to reduce cancer risk. Developed by a national panel of experts in cancer research, public policy, prevention, and more, the guideline recommends dietary patterns for individuals for cancer prevention within a community context. In addition to highlighting physical activity and maintaining a healthy weight, recommendations focus on eating nutrient-dense fruits, vegetables, legumes, and whole grains and limiting or excluding red and processed meats to reduce the risk for cancer. Research consistently associates eating patterns that follow these guidelines with reduced risk for cancer, mortality, and chronic disease and improved environmental impact. The report also calls for community initiatives and public policies to increase access to healthful foods.
