Scanning the Human Genome for Host Factors Required for SARS-CoV-2 Infection

Study in a Sentence: Researchers performed a genome-wide scan of genes required for SARS-CoV-2 infection in human lung cells.

Healthy for Humans: Genes and biological pathways that play a role in SARS-CoV-2 infection of human cells provide clues about the mechanisms of infection and potential targets for COVID-19 drugs and vaccines.

Redefining Research: By using a high-throughput CRISPR gene editing technique to systematically knock out the function of more than 19,000 genes in the human genome and then exposing gene edited cells to SARS-CoV-2, researchers determined which genes prevented infection and characterized their biological functions.
