We will share health-promoting dietary strategies that are both budget-friendly and accessible. Nutrition education components help individuals to connect diet and disease outcomes while they are simultaneously learning about easy-to-prepare plant-based recipes. Not only are ingredients and recipes budget-friendly and accessible, but minimal kitchen tools are required for food preparation.
Participants will take away knowledge and strategies that will help them to realize savings in the short- and long-term, both in terms of their dollars saved and enhanced quality of life.
We will demonstrate general concepts behind healthful eating habits starting with describing the Power Plate of essential food
groups of vegetables, grains, legumes, and fruits. We will prepare for you two dishes, three if there's time, of easy, healthful, tasty foods, while discussing nutrition. We will start with an Apple Cinnamon Oatmeal; Dilip uses this in classrooms that kids love - with apples instead of sugar. Then we will make Yes-You-Can Black Bean Chili; we will discuss the nutritional powerhouse that beans and legumes are and show you how easily you can integrate them into your daily cooking whether from canned or dried beans. If we have time we will make a Zesty White Bean Dip; but we will share the recipe in any case. This is part of the Physicians'
Committee Food for Life Program and after the demonstration we will ask all attendees to share feedback via a survey.
