Foods for a Healthy Heart
Monday, January 26, 2026 6:30 pm to 8:00 pm

Take action to bolster your heart health through simple diet and lifestyle changes. Deitra Dennis, RN, introduces Food For A Healthy Heart, and Dr. Barnard presents heart health science for the nutritional segment of the class. Topics addressed include cardiovascular risk factors, such as high blood pressure and high cholesterol, with recipes and nutrition strategies for these conditions. The recipe demonstrations in this class feature delicious lunch options, and class resources will include recipes and more.

We’ll also watch and discuss the short video How Black Cooks Built American Flavor. The recipe demonstration will feature delicious, Afro-American-inspired lunch (or dinner) options, and class resources will include the recipes and additional supporting materials.

Afro-American Culinary Traditions is a series of classes designed to honor and explore the culinary history and customs of the past, offering more soulful foods and unique flavors, and inspiring and empowering people to prevent and fight chronic disease.

The series acknowledges the ancestral ties of West African foodways that were introduced to the United States through the Middle Passage, as well as the culinary traditions, such as soul food, developed by African Americans throughout their history in the Country.
