Class Dates

Foods and Prostate Cancer Survival
Thursday, November 7, 2024 2:00pm to 4:00pm

November is Prostate Cancer Awareness Month, a time to focus on prevention and education. In this class, part of the Cancer Project Series: The Power of Food for Cancer Prevention and Survival by the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM), we'll examine the critical role diet plays in reducing prostate cancer risk. You'll learn how dietary fat can impair the immune system and increase hormone production, leading to higher rates of hormone-related cancers, including prostate cancer.

We'll discuss the benefits of a low-fat, high-fiber diet and the protective effects of a whole foods plant-based lifestyle. You'll also gain insights into the importance of fiber, what happens when fiber intake is low, and how a diet rich in fiber and low in fat can serve as a powerful tool for cancer prevention.

During this 2-hour class, you'll not only learn the science but also get hands-on experience in the kitchen. We’ll demonstrate three easy, delicious recipes—Three-Bean Chili, Tex-Mex Bulgur Pilaf, and Tomato Cucumber Basil Salad—that are low in fat and high in fiber. You'll have the opportunity to follow along with one of these recipes. Participants will receive literature, handouts, and copies of all three recipes demonstrated.

Format:

  • Part 1: Lecture video
  • Part 2: Cooking demonstration

Who is this class for? Anyone interested in learning how to prevent prostate cancer through food, including cancer survivors, their families, and friends.
