Cooking to Combat Covid-19 - 4-week class series
Even with all the precautions we are taking to protect ourselves and each other, each day we learn more about why our overall health also matters in the fight against this illness. In a recent survey of those hospitalized with COVID-19, 96% were shown to be suffering from comorbidities (e.g. hypertension, heart disease, obesity and/or diabetes). There are things that we can do to limit spread, like maintaining social distance and wearing masks. We also have the power to use lifestyle changes, especially moving toward a whole food plant-based diet, to reduce the risk of getting the virus in the first place and, if caught, to lessen the chances of its severity.
This four-part online Nutrition and Cooking class series will share ways to combat Combat COVID -19 from the inside out. Learn how to slow, stop, and reverse many chronic health conditions through delicious, easy recipes. Make the connection between the healing power of colorful foods rich in nutrients, and the risks of the foods that may be making us more vulnerable.
Food for Life certified Instructors Laurie Courage and Dilip Barman will share the evidence-based science behind the power of eating more plants, with videos, quizzes, and handouts to make sure you take away clear next steps. Together from their kitchens in Long Island, NY, and Durham, NC, they will show you how to a plant-based lifestyle can be an easy way to reduce your risk, serve your family delicious food and stay healthy.
The class series includes 4 classes, each 2.5 hours:
- Boost Your Immune System (Sat June 6th) - Colorful plant foods are filled with immunity-boosting phytochemicals and antioxidants. Eat a rainbow and protect your health with beta-carotene, lycopene, zinc, and vitamins.
- Healthy Heart (Sat Jun 13th) - A plant-based diet that is low in fat helps to improve blood work, lower cholesterol and blood pressure and improve heart health.
- Fighting Diabetes with Food (Sat June 20th) - Low fat whole plant-based foods are a great way to reduce your insulin sensitivity and have better blood-sugar levels
- Foods for Weight Control (Sat June 27th) - Learn how to lose weight and keep it off by adding more fiber-rich foods to your diet.
