Myths and Facts: The Reality of Primate Experimentation
Thursday, May 7, 2026, 1 p.m. ET
Join Physicians Committee's Director of Medical Research, Dr. Jarrod Bailey, for this informative live webinar.
Monkeys, such as macaques, baboons, and marmosets, are used in many areas of medical research and regulatory testing, but biological differences severely limit the relevance of primate experiments to human diseases and clinical outcomes. Not only does this contribute to costly drug development failures, it causes the needless suffering and death of countless animals. Human-based approaches can better model key features of human biology, avoiding species-specific experimental barriers. These methods, like organoids and tissue chips, are developed from human cells, tissues, and data and can replicate the structure and function of human organs in ways that are impossible to do with animal experiments.
In honor of International Macaque Week, Dr. Jarrod Bailey of the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine will dispel common myths about nonhuman primate experiments promoted by pro-animal experiment groups, like that they are crucial for drug development and that regulatory oversight sufficiently protects the animals. This webinar will provide key information for advocates—with or without a scientific background—to combat these talking points and support the transition away from the use of primates towards human-based research and test methods. Join us and our fight for the more than 100,000 monkeys used in U.S. research labs each year.
