Survey of Live Animals in Surgery Training

The Physicians Committee is actively surveying all general surgery residency programs in the United States and Canada to determine their training methods.

Currently:

• 78% of responsive programs use only human-relevant training methods, like medical simulators and human cadavers.
• 284 programs use only nonanimal training methods
• 8 programs use live animals

These are some of the surgery programs the Physicians Committee is actively working to change:

• Medical College of Wisconsin
• Northeast Ohio Medical University and St. Elizabeth Hospital
• Oregon Health and Science University
• University of Cincinnati
• University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus
• Wake Forest University
