Dennis is a disabled veteran who experienced a health decline after leaving the U.S. Marines Corp. He developed high blood pressure, high cholesterol, Type 2 diabetes and his weight increased to nearly 350 pounds. He became vegetarian and lost weight for a year but eventually want back to his old ways. A few years later, he nearly suffered a heart attack and was told he needed a double stent or bypass surgery. Neither option was ideal. One day, he dined at GreenFare restaurant and on the spot he signed up for the Physicians Committee’s 21-day Vegan Kickstart to improve his health. Dennis has since lost 180 pounds. Based on his health journey, as a Food for Life instructor he enjoys teaching about diabetes, heart disease, lifestyle management and eating on a budget. He has moderated a diabetes peer support group for the Barnard Medical Center and speaks about motivational and lifestyle changes for Physicians Committee events and programs. Dennis also provides both one-on-one and group coaching.
