In November 2012, while attending the annual Northeast Florida VegFest, Chernice met Food for Life instructor Heather Borders. Heather gave her testimony how a plant-based diet lowered her husband’s cholesterol level. This caught Chernice's attention because of her mother’s sudden death the previous year. Chernice was skeptical of a plant-based diet lifestyle until she watched the documentary Forks Over Knives. In March 2013, Chernice participated in the 21-Day Kickstart and stayed connected with the Physicians Committee for recipes, information, referrals, and life-changing testimonies.
Now, Chernice assists Heather with community nutrition education and food preparation and she independently conducts her own Food for Life classes in her community.
