Beyond the Medication: Practical Guidance for Those on GLP-1s

Monday, Jan. 11 - Monday, Feb. 1, 2027, 6 p.m. ET

Join Dr. James Loomis, medical director at the Barnard Medical Center, and Caryn Dugan, culinary educator and licensed Food for Life instructor, for a four-week online course designed to help you get the most out of your GLP-1 medication while building healthy habits that last. Each week, Dr. Loomis will share an easy-to-understand educational presentation on nutrition and health for people taking GLP-1 medications, followed by a practical, plant-based cooking demonstration led by Chef Caryn featuring delicious, nutritious meals you can prepare at home.

Week 1: Understanding GLP-1s and Managing Side Effects
Learn how GLP-1 medications work, what to expect during treatment, and how to manage common side effects such as nausea, constipation, and digestive discomfort. We'll share simple nutrition strategies and demonstrate easy-to-prepare meals that can help minimize side effects and keep you feeling your best.

Week 2: Getting Enough Protein and Maintaining Muscle
Losing weight is important, but maintaining muscle and strength is just as essential. Learn how much protein you need, how to meet your protein goals even when your appetite is reduced, and why strength training matters. Our cooking demonstration will feature delicious, protein-rich plant-based meals that help you stay strong and healthy.

Week 3: Nourishing Your Body Beyond Protein
When you're eating less, every bite counts! Discover how to get essential nutrients like iron, calcium, vitamin B12, and fiber to support your energy, bone health, digestive health, and overall well-being. We'll demonstrate how to prepare simple, nutrient-packed meals and combine foods to help your body get the most nutrition from every bite.

Week 4: Building Healthy Habits for Lasting Success
GLP-1 medications can be powerful tools, but long-term success also depends on the habits you build. Learn how to create sustainable eating patterns, manage hunger, and maintain a healthy weight over time. For those who may eventually stop taking their medication, we'll discuss what to expect as appetite returns and practical strategies to help minimize weight regain. Our final cooking demonstration will focus on satisfying, easy-to-prepare meals you can enjoy every day.

Our Goal: Help you feel confident about what to eat, maintain muscle and strength, meet your nutritional needs, and build practical, lifelong habits that support your health and well-being, whether you remain on GLP-1 medication or eventually stop. The medication helps regulate appetite. The food you eat, the muscle you maintain, and the habits you build help determine your long-term health.
