Diabetes Reversal Online Program

Friday, July 10 - Friday, Oct. 2, 2026, Fridays from 12-1PM ET (No class on August 14th) via Zoom

Join us for a physician- and dietitian-led online program to reverse diabetes with a plant-based diet!

Research studies have shown that a healthy plant-based diet may improve type 2 diabetes symptoms and even reverse the disease. This program will help you improve insulin sensitivity and lower blood sugar levels while following a plant-based diet!

Vanita Rahman, MD, Shannon Gray, RD, and Emily Perryman, RD will guide you through science, practical applications, and recipes, with ample time for personal support.

Additionally, you may also register for DXA scans to assess body composition before and after the program. DXA scans are one of the most accurate tests to assess body composition, and body composition plays a crucial role in insulin sensitivity and diabetes management.

  • 12 live, interactive group classes via Zoom.
  • Personal check-ins with the study experts.
  • A digital scale to help you monitor your weight.
  • Helpful books, including Dr. Neal Barnard’s Program for Reversing Diabetes and Dr. Vanita Rahman's Simply Plant Based.

Frequently Asked Questions

How will the online program work?

After registering on the PCRM.org website, the program team will send you a link to the weekly Zoom meetings and help you schedule the DXA scans if you opted for them. All weekly meetings will be held online through Zoom. We will also provide a link to the resource portal and ship the books and digital scale to your address.

What is a DXA scan and is it safe?

A DXA or DEXA (dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry) scan is a quick imaging test that uses very low dose x-rays to measure the different types of tissues in our bodies: bone mineral content, lean mass (such as muscle and organs), and fat mass. It is commonly used to measure bone density or body composition. In this program, we are using the DXA scan to assess body composition (not bone density).

During the DXA scan, participants are exposed to radiation. However, the exposure is lower than that with a chest x-ray. In general, DXA scans are considered less harmful than standard x-rays. All DXA scans will be carried out by certified technicians taking standard precautions.

What is the Value of a DXA Scan for Body Composition?

A DXA scan is one of the most accurate tests to assess body composition. At the same height and weight, different individuals may have different amounts of lean and fatty tissue. This means that their risks of type 2 diabetes, hypertension, and heart disease will be different, because muscle and fat tissue have different functions and effects.

In this program, you have the option to complete a baseline and final scan (at 12 weeks) to compare how, not only your weight, but also your body composition changes.

Where are the DXA scans done and am I required to get it?

The DXA scans will be completed at the start and at the end of the program at our office in Washington DC (5100 Wisconsin Ave, NW., Washington DC 20016). Participants are not required to get a DXA scan but may do so for an additional fee of $250 (including both scans).

How does the cost of this program compare with that of a GLP-1 drug? Will this program help me if I am already on a GLP-1 drug?

Many insurance plans do not cover GLP-1 medications for weight loss and without insurance coverage FDA-approved GLP-1 medications cost approximately $300 - $400 per week. The costs may be lower with insurance coverage and will depend upon your specific plan. On the other hand, compounded GLP-1 medications are NOT approved by the FDA or covered by medical insurance and usually cost about $100 per week.

In contrast, the diabetes reversal online program costs $50 per week and includes weekly education and support from a physician and registered dietitian. The program can help individuals with prediabetes and diabetes. And for those who are already taking a GLP-1 medications, the program can help them optimize their nutritional intake, weight loss results, and help them wean off GLP-1s.

How is this program different from the National Diabetes Program?

At the Physicians Committee, we offer many types of programs to accommodate our participants’ needs, preferences, and schedules. Here’s a brief description of each program:

  1. Diabetes Reversal Online Program is an online program that will run over 12 weeks. There will be 12 weekly classes that will last approximately 60 minutes and will include nutrition education and live interaction among the program team and participants. Each class is led by a practicing physician and registered dietitians and will include approximately 15-25 participants. The weekly class topics will include education and support regarding nutrition, binge and emotional eating, GLP-1s, food addiction, and sleep. All participants will have access to personal check-ins with the study experts and will receive nutrition books and a digital scale to track their body weight. Participants will also have the option (for an additional fee) to get a DXA scan for body composition before and after the program.
  2. The National Diabetes Program is a six-week online program with weekly sessions that introduces the role of nutrition in diabetes management. It involves a larger group setting and is led by registered dietitians. It does not include one-on-one check-ins with the program team, a digital scale, books, or the option to get a DXA scan for body composition.
