Body Composition Assessment
Dual-Energy X-ray Absorptiometry
We now offer DXA scans for body composition analysis.
What is a DXA scan?
A DXA or DEXA (dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry) scan is a quick imaging test that uses very low-dose X-rays to measure the different types of tissues in our bodies. It is commonly used to measure bone density or body composition. In this case, we are using DXA scans to assess body composition (not bone density).
What is the value of a DXA scan for body composition?
A DXA scan is one of the most accurate tests to assess body composition. At the same height and weight, different individuals may have different amounts of lean and fatty tissue. This means that their risks of type 2 diabetes, hypertension, and heart disease will be different because muscle and fat tissue have different functions and effects. DXA scans can be very helpful in assessing our current body composition and how it changes with diet, exercise, and body weight.
What does the DXA scan report show?
Our total body weight is composed of three types of tissues: bone mineral content, lean tissue, and fatty tissue. When it comes to health, the amount and distribution of fatty tissue is more important than our total body weight. DXA scans measure the total percentages of lean tissue, fatty tissue, and bone mineral content. They also provide information about the amount of fat we have in our abdomen. Research shows that abdominal fat, especially the type found deep in our abdomen, is more likely to lead to increases in blood sugar and cardiovascular disease.
What is the cost of a DXA scan, and will insurance cover it?
Each DXA scan costs $200 and is not covered by insurance. Payment is required at the time of your scan.
Can I pay using my HSA funds?
Various HSA accounts have different rules regarding coverage. We do not accept HSA cards for payment. However, we will provide a receipt that you may submit to your HSA account for reimbursement.
