What is the Building Healthy Communities program?

Building Healthy Communities offers social and educational support to anyone interested in learning about or practicing a healthy plant-based lifestyle. Membership and participation are free and open to all. Healthy Communities are independent groups consisting of individuals who are interested in connecting over healthy food, building friendships, and having fun!

What is a local Healthy Community and what is its purpose?

A Healthy Community is an independent member organization with the Physicians Committee. Each Healthy Community organizes its own activities and is led by one or more local leaders. Read more about becoming a leader

Each local chapter is part of a greater global grassroots movement dedicated to building a culture of healthy humans and nonhuman animals within a healthy planet and society. You do not have to be plant-based in order to join a Healthy Community or be considered a member. As a member, you only need to be interested in improving your health and gaining a greater understanding of the benefits of a plant-based lifestyle.

Is there a membership fee to join a local chapter of Building Healthy Communities?

No, there is not a membership fee, however there may be expenses associated with joining a Healthy Community such as dining out as a group or attending field trips, etc. A Healthy Community leader may ask members for help covering the costs of the meeting space or providing food and supplies for events.

How can I join a Healthy Community?

Visit the Building Healthy Communities map to search by location. Once you find a Healthy Community you’d like to join, click on “More Details” and that will direct you to the Healthy Community’s primary communication method, which will allow you to follow the group on social media or connect with the leader via email or a website.

What qualifies someone as a Healthy Community Member?

In short, a member is an individual who becomes involved in a local Healthy Community via social media participation, joins the group’s email list, and attends events.

What can I do if there's no local Healthy Community in my area?

If you discover there's not yet a Healthy Community in your area, you can start one!
