New Study Shows Plant-Based Diets Help Manage Type 2 Diabetes

Dr. Kahleova discusses her recently published study that reveals a plant-based diet improves beta-cell function and insulin sensitivity in overweight adults with no history of diabetes. The research conducted by the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine was published in Nutrients.

The results of the 16-week randomized clinical trial show eating a plant-based diet increased meal-stimulated insulin secretion and beta-cell glucose sensitivity. When compared to the control group, the plant-based diet group also experienced a decrease in blood sugar levels both while fasting and during meal tests.

Dr. Kahleova will walk you through how the study was conducted, the criteria participants must meet, the dietary restrictions imposed on them, and the results. She says there was no variation of the promising results based on race, age, or sex.
