Caldwell Esselstyn Jr., M.D.

Dr. Esselstyn's Nutrition Tip

"All the cardiovascular interventional procedures carry considerable risk of morbidity, including new heart attacks, strokes, infections, and, for some, an inevitable loss of cognition. By contrast, the benefits of a plant-based diet actually grow with time. The longer you follow it, the healthier you will be."

Caldwell Esselstyn Jr., M.D., has been associated with the Cleveland Clinic since 1968. Dr. Esselstyn grew disappointed in the way he and his colleagues were treating cancer and heart disease, relying on pills and surgical procedures despite their side effects and risks. In 1995, he published his benchmark long-term nutritional research on arresting and reversing coronary artery disease in severely ill patients. No compliant patients have sustained disease progression. Today, 20 years later, patients who have maintained a healthful vegan diet continue to thrive.
