Avoiding Red and Processed Meat Beneficial Even After Colon Cancer Diagnosis

People with stage III colon cancer have better outcomes when they avoid certain meat products, consume more plants, and have a healthy body weight, according to a new study from the University of California San Francisco. Researchers analyzed the diet and lifestyles of 992 stage III colon cancer patients over a period of seven years. Those with a body mass index between 18.5 and 24.9 kg/m2 who exercised and followed a diet high in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains and low in red/processed meats had longer overall survival and disease-free survival rates, compared with patients who did not meet these parameters.
