According to the American Heart Association, heart disease is the number 1 killer for all Americans, and stroke is also a leading cause of death. According to the Alabama Public Health, diabetes is a serious health condition and was AL's leading cause of death in 2019. The three main types of diabetes are- Type 1, Type2, and gestational. Most individuals have type 2 diabetes (90-95 percent). Type diabetes is when you have abnormally high blood glucose levels, and the body can not properly utilize insulin. For this reason, lifestyle factors play a significant role in the development of type 2 diabetes.

As scary as those statistics are, African American children's risks of getting those diseases are even higher. However, African American children can decrease their chances of developing these preventable conditions by taking simple steps such as: consuming a predominantly whole food, plant-based diet, managing stress, getting regular physical activity, and working closely with their healthcare provider.

The Food For Life: Kids Health, is an evidence-based cooking/nutrition class that will teach children how easy it is to consume more fruits and vegetables. With the use of evidence-based plant-based nutrition, anyone in the family can prepare these foods. The class will be approximately 2 hours long. The class will be taught by a dietetics student, Licensed Food for Life Instructor, and Board-Certified Lifestyle Medicine Professional: Angelia Dickinson, MS, DipACLM, and sponsored by ARC- Awakening Respect and Compassion for all sentient beings. ARC is a local non-profit, vegan community that raises awareness on animals being slaughtered, to produce some of the worlds leading causes of death. Not only does ARC focus on animal rights, but they also focus on food justice surrounding races from people of color, and promoting overall health with the use of whole food, plant-based diet.
