Frequently Asked Questions

  1. How is this program different from the Kickstart Intensive or the 21-Day Vegan Kickstart?

At the Physicians Committee, we offer several types of programs to accommodate our participants’ needs, preferences, and schedules. Here’s a brief description of each program:

    1. The plant-based weight loss program and research study will run over 12 weeks. We will check participants’ blood pressure, cholesterol levels, hemoglobin A1c (to screen for diabetes and prediabetes), and body composition using a DXA scan before and after the program. There will be 12 weekly classes that will last approximately 60 minutes and will include a weigh-in, nutrition education, recipe exchange, and support. Each class will cover a different topic related to nutrition and health. Two of the classes will involve cooking demonstrations with tastings. Other than light refreshments at each class, we will not provide meal plans or meals.
    2. The Kickstart Intensive is a two-day immersion program, which includes 15 lectures that cover various health topics such as diabetes and cardiovascular disease. The program includes four meals and cooking demonstrations. We will also check participants’ blood pressure, cholesterol, and blood sugar levels at the start of the program.
    3. The 21-day Vegan Kickstart is a free online resource that includes daily recipes and nutrition tips for participants to follow.
  2. How will I get my DXA scan and blood tests? Do I need to make an appointment before the first class?

After you register for the program, the staff at the Barnard Medical Center will contact you to schedule an appointment. The appointment will include health measurements, lab tests, and a DXA scan. This appointment will be scheduled prior to the first class, and a similar appointment will be scheduled after the last class.

  3. Research studies are usually free – why is there a fee for this one?

Research studies are structured in many different ways based upon how they are funded. Studies may be free, provide minimal compensation to participants, or involve a participation fee. There is a fee associated with this research study because it is not externally funded.

  4. I thought that I saw recruitment for this study earlier in the year – is this the same study and program?

The plant-based weight loss program and research study recruits participants in several cohorts throughout 2019-2020.

  5. What is your refund policy, and can I pay in installments?

At this point, we are only accepting single payments. We do not offer refunds for cancellations or missed classes.

  6. What if I am unable to attend all 12 sessions?

We encourage you to attend all 12 sessions so that you derive the most benefit from the program. However, we do understand that at times you may have to miss a class or more. If you miss a class, we will do our best to accommodate you. We will provide you with the written materials from the missed session and answer any questions you may have.

  7. How many participants do you expect in the program?

The research study will involve several cohorts, and we expect to have anywhere from 15-40 participants in each cohort.

  8. Can I bring someone with me to the classes?

If you feel that a friend or partner's attendance at the group sessions will be helpful to you, please invite them. However, we will not monitor your guest’s body weight, blood pressure, labs or DXA during the program.

  9. Can I get handouts prior to the program or classes?

We will distribute the handouts for each class on the day of the class. If you miss a class, we will provide you with the handouts at the subsequent class.
