Saving Emily
By Nicolas Read, Illustrations By Ellen Klem
When twelve-year-old Chris moves with his mother from the city to the country, he is sure he’ll never fit in. The country is strange and lonely compared to the city, and the other kids, mostly from ranching families, have known each other all their lives. No one is eager to make friends with the newcomer until he meets Gina, a free-spirited girl with a love of animals.
Emily, a heifer born on a nearby ranch, doesn’t fit in, either. After a few happy months on the ranch, she faces the cruel realities of branding, the livestock auction, confinement in a feedlot, and a frightening ride in a cattle truck. While the other cattle accept their fate at the hands of humans, Emily longs for a life where she is in charge of her own destiny.
When Gina introduces Chris to a neighbor who buys ranch animals and brings them to his Rescue Ranch to live out their lives in peace, Chris and Emily are brought together in a life-and-death adventure. Gina and Chris have a good plan to rescue Emily--but will it be enough to save her life?
