The Cancer Project Features Cooking Classes in Video News Release

This month millions of Americans will receive lifesaving information broadcast right into their living rooms. The Cancer Project has distributed a video news release featuring the Food for Life cooking class series to news editors at 1,000 network television affiliates across the country.

The spot, which can be watched online, explains how healthy vegetarian diets can reduce the risk of cancer and improve survival. It features Ellen Jaffe Jones, who has been teaching Food for Life classes in southwest Florida since August 2005.

Coming from a family burdened by heart disease and breast cancer, Jaffe Jones changed her lifestyle in 1980 when her sister was diagnosed with breast cancer for the second time. The same year, Jaffe Jones was hospitalized with a life-threatening colon blockage. She was told that she would be on medication for the rest of her life. “I went to the health food store and read all the books on health and nutrition and haven't stopped reading since,” Jaffe Jones said.  “I read Dr. Neal Barnard's book, The Power of Your Plate.  It changed my way of thinking and saved my life.”

She hopes that these classes will improve the quality of life for others in the same way that the healthful eating she demonstrates has improved hers. “When people stand up in my classes and say that just after a few weeks, they've noticed incredible changes, I know that this information is invaluable,” she said.

“Eating a low-fat, plant-based diet is the single easiest thing you can do to prevent and survive cancer, as well as so many other diseases of affluence,” Jaffe Jones said. “I tell class participants that this is, I hope, just the beginning of a journey to good health.  I encourage them to listen to their bodies.”

The Food for Life classes teach participants about foods for cancer prevention and survival. Each class shows a 10-minute nutrition video followed by an hour-long cooking demonstration and food sampling.

The classes are free, and are attended by cancer survivors, their friends and family, and anyone who is interested in cancer prevention. Participants also receive a free copy of The Survivor’s Handbook: Eating Right for Cancer Survival, which contains recipes and nutritional guidance.
