Educational Resources
What is Responsible Medicine?
As physicians, we face challenges beyond acquiring technical know-how. Helping patients prevent illness and dealing with tough ethical issues are as important in medicine as suturing skill and diagnostic ability. We are confronted with many questions, and answers are now always easy to find.
Where do I find resources on nutrition?
What can we do to reduce or eliminate the use of animals in research?
How do I meet the needs of low-income patients, the homeless, or persons with AIDS?
These fundamental topics are not addressed in the curricula of many medical schools, and only in passing at others. Thats why thousands of doctors are part of the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine. We are here to make sure that a focus on prevention, good nutrition, compassion, and ethics is front and center in medical education and practice.
Our educational resources answer your questions...
Nutrition Curriculum
- How can diet and lifestyle actually reverse heart disease?
- What foods are potent cancer fighters?
- What is the key to permanent weight loss?
- What about vegetarian nutrition?
In recent years, weve unlocked the power of foods and helped thousands of patients learn what to put on their plates to reduce the risk of heart disease, cancer, and other serious illnesses. Even so, many medical schools are slow to incorporate modern nutrition information into core courses, and physicians worldwide are still more likely to prescribe a cholesterol-lowering drug than a tried and true cholesterol-lowering diet.
PCRMs Nutrition Education
Curriculum is packed with lesson plans, peer-reviewed
journal articles, and practical advice on how to put foods to
work. It can be put straight to use in the classroom, and is
ideal for informal brown-bag seminars.
PCRM is on the forefront of nutrition education: We were instrumental in pushing the federal government to recognize the healthful benefits of a vegetarian diet; our research studies continue to investigate dietary links to heart disease, diabetes, menstrual pain, breast cancer, and other serious health concerns; and PCRMs president Neal Barnard, M.D., is the author of authoritative books about the power of foods to prevent disease, including Foods That Fight Pain; Eat Right, Live Longer; Food for Life; and The Power of Your Plate.
Research Issues Compendium
- What are the alternatives to animal laboratories?
- How do I approach instructors and classmates with my ethical concerns?
- What about unethical research on humans? Could the Tuskegee experiments happen again?
Harvard Medical School recently developed a comprehensive, clinically-based, and enormously popular alternative to the traditional dog lab. Now, instead of watching the effects of various drugs on an anesthetized dog, students can go directly into the human operating room to observe an actual cardiac bypass surgery.
PCRMs Research Issues Compendium shows
how you can implement this kind of exciting teaching opportunity at
your medical school, and contains discussion materials on making all
research more effective, efficient, and humane. Animal issues are covered
as well as the ethics of human experiments.
Medicine and Society Curriculum
- How does gender affect patient careor our own professional opportunities?
- What can I do to provide health care to the homeless, migrant workers, or other disenfranchised groups?
- What are the special needs of the patients with HIV and AIDS?
PCRMs Medicine and Society Curriculum offers perspectives for patient-centered, effective health care, with a special eye on ensuring proper care for traditionally disenfranchised groups.
These materials address the medical needs of the homeless population; offer advice on recognizing and effectively treating victims of domestic abuse; examine the prevalence of unnecessary surgical procedures; discuss issues in care for patients with HIV and AIDS; and consider challenges encountered by women in health professions.

short documentary video, Advances in Medical Education with
Henry Heimlich, M.D., examines one of todays most pressing
issues in medical education. The film provides an exciting look
into Harvard Medical Schools comprehensive, popular, and clinically-based
alternative to the traditional physiology dog lab. Now,

animal, students at Harvard can go directly into the operating
room to observe an actual human cardiac bypass surgery. The video
provides a poignant discussion of the ethics and effectiveness
of live animal laboratories in medical education.

Innovations in Trauma Training Video
The PCRM video Innovations in Trauma Training looks at an exciting program that uses life-like simulators and human cadavers to train physicians to provide emergency care to trauma victims. Typically, live animals are used to demonstrate procedures such as chest tube insertion, peritoneal lavage, and venous cutdown. But leading the way toward more realistic and popular courses, the Maryland Institute of Emergency Medical Services Systems in Baltimore has developed this innovative human-anatomy-based program. The film includes interviews with the course director, a long-time course instructor, and participants who give their impressions of this program.
Innovations in Trauma Training is designed for instructors seeking to improve their courses and for health professionals interested in pursuing continuing medical education or certification in trauma procedures. Instructors and health professionals can contact PCRM for a free copy.
For general audiences, the tape is available from PCRM for $10.00, which includes shipping and handling.
