The Cancer Project Partners with Dana Farber Cancer Institute |

The Cancer Project and the Dana Farber Cancer Institute have teamed
up to spread the word about cancer prevention in the Blum Family
Resource mobile van. The van will host a number of cancer prevention
informational sessions in the Boston area, including Food for Life
cooking and nutrition classes.
The first public Food for Life classes took place in late August
in front of the Bowdoin Street Community Health Center in Dorchester,
Mass. The classes featured information and recipes related to the
cancer-nutrition topics Fueling Up on Low-Fat Foods and Favoring
Fiber. The Blum Family Resource van hopes to expand its
programming to meet the needs of many underserved neighborhoods
in Boston. Whole Foods Market donated the food for all Food for
Life cooking demonstrations in the van.
The classes were taught by longtime Food for Life instructor Rose
Lee, who spoke enthusiastically about all the health benefits of
adopting a vegetarian diet. “In addition to preventing cancer,
making the right food choices lowers one’s risk of heart
disease and obesity as well,” she said.
The Food for Life
Nutrition and Cooking Class series was launched in 2001 to help
cancer survivors and those interested in cancer prevention take
advantage of the healing power of foods. Designed by physicians,
nutrition experts, and registered dietitians, each class includes
information about how certain foods and nutrients work to promote
or discourage cancer growth, along with cooking demonstrations
of simple and healthy recipes that can be recreated easily at home.
Other topics for the classes include Antioxidants and Phytochemicals,
Discovering Dairy, and Fueling Up on Low-Fat Foods.
The Cancer Project has cooking classes in more than 45 cities across
20 states. To find a Food for Life cooking class near you, visit www.CancerProject.org.
