PCRM Names “Cruelty-Free” Breast Cancer
Charities
October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and dozens of charities
are vying for your donations. Unfortunately, many of those charities
spend donated funds on animal tests. Please consider donating to
one of the following six charities that have received the Humane
Charity Seal of Approval:
The Cancer Project
An independent, separately incorporated affiliate of the
Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine, The Cancer Project
advances cancer prevention and survival through nutrition education
and research. Begun in 1991 as a PCRM program, it became a 501(c)(3)
organization in 2004. The Cancer Project offers free vegetarian
nutrition and cooking classes focused on cancer prevention and
survival in more than 40 cities throughout the country. For more
information, see www.CancerProject.org.
American Breast Cancer Foundation
ABCF is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit
organization led by a volunteer Board of Directors. Its mission
is to provide early detection, education, and screening services
to those in need through outreach programs such as Remote Area
Medical Expeditions. It also advocates for and funds research
in such groundbreaking areas as ductal lavage, cancer vaccines,
and DNA microarray technology, and provides financial and other
support and assistance to individual patients. For more information,
see www.abcf.org.
Avon Breast Cancer Crusade
The goal of the Avon Breast Cancer Crusade is to benefit all women
through research, clinical care, support services, education, and
early detection. Special emphasis is placed on reaching medically
underserved women, including low-income, elderly, and minority
women, and women without adequate health insurance. Reversing historical
disparities in breast cancer care is also a priority of the Avon
Breast Cancer Crusade. For more information, see www.avoncompany.com/women/avoncrusade.
The Breast Cancer Fund
TBCF believes that most
breast cancer can be prevented, and has adopted a bold mission—eliminate
the environmental causes of the disease. Through public education,
policy initiatives, outdoor challenges, and other innovative campaigns,
TBCF mobilizes the public to secure the changes needed to stop
this devastating epidemic. For more information, see www.breastcancerfund.org.
Cancer Treatment Research Foundation
Since 1995, the foundation has committed over $10 million to researchers
around the world. It actively monitors the progress of funded researchers
to ensure advancement in studies by measuring the positive impacts
on patients. Projects funded include studies on all types of cancer,
patient quality of life, novel immunology treatments, and integrative
medicine therapies. In the breast cancer field, a number of studies
have been funded that measure effects on patients of new treatments,
prevention strategies, and vaccines to prevent relapse. For more
information, see www.ctrf.org.
SHARE
Since 1976, SHARE has been empowering communities
and individuals to advocate for increased access to care, improved
quality of life, and increased research funding. Its unique support
model ensures that no one need face breast or ovarian cancer alone.
Many emotional and practical issues can arise from a cancer diagnosis.
Cancer survivors help others address these issues by drawing on
their own experiences. SHARE’s services include hotlines,
survivor-led support groups, wellness programs, educational forums,
outreach programs, and advocacy activities. For more information,
see www.sharecancersupport.org.
