Breast Cancer Survivor Cara Liberatore Climbs and Cooks for Wellness
A professional mountain climbing guide and cooking instructor,
Cara Liberatore has put both skills to use to fight breast cancer.
After losing her mother to the disease a little over a decade ago,
Liberatore, who lives in Bozeman, Montana, organized and led the
annual Grand Teton Climb for Life to raise money for cancer awareness
and wellness programs for survivors.
Despite her mother’s illness, Liberatore never expected
to battle breast cancer herself. But when doctors diagnosed her
with the disease in August 2003, her passion for physical fitness
and the memory of her mother telling her to follow her own heart
kept her going. When doctors started her on chemotherapy, for example,
she rollerbladed to and from her sessions and went skiing daily.
Liberatore credits her physical activity and healthful eating
for successful completion of her cancer treatment. She wants to
help other women prevent or beat breast cancer too, so she shares
her own inspirational story while teaching cooking classes for
The Cancer Project, a Washington, D.C.-based affiliate of the Physicians
Committee for Responsible Medicine, which promotes a healthy vegetarian
diet for cancer prevention and survival.
Liberatore works as an instructor for The Cancer Project’s
Food for Life educational series, which provides free cooking demonstrations
along with lifesaving information on how low-fat diets help prevent
cancer recurrence. During eight consecutive classes, Liberatore
shows students how to plan and fix delicious low-fat meals full
of nutritious produce and whole grains. Liberatore believes eating
a low-fat plant-based diet has helped her take control of her health,
and she wants to encourage other women to do the same.
