“Wow, it’s that easy?”
New Study Refutes Myth About Vegan Diets
A
new study conducted by PCRM president Neal Barnard, M.D. proves
that a major diet overhaul is easier than most doctors or nurses
might imagine. Published in the summer 2004 issue of the Journal
of Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation, the study shows that patients
easily transition from a standard omnivorous diet to a low-fat,
vegan diet.
The study refutes a commonly held misconception that vegetarian
or vegan diets are hard to adopt. It is the fourth study that Dr.
Barnard has published on this topic.
The study included 64 overweight, postmenopausal women who were
randomly assigned to either a low-fat, vegan diet or a more conventional
(seemingly “easier”) low-fat diet following the guidelines
of the National Cholesterol Education Program.
The vegan group not only lost significantly more weight than the
control group, but its participants were just as positive about
their dietary changes. In fact, 86 percent of the vegans said they
planned to stick with the diet after the study concluded.
