Tackling Diabetes:
PCRM Thinks Outside Research Box
With
U.S. diabetes rates projected to double by 2050, reporters and scientists
alike are showing a growing interest in PCRM’s innovative
diabetes research. Featured in Newsweek and other major
publications and funded by the National Institutes of Health, PCRM’s
study is testing the efficacy of a low-fat vegan diet for individuals
with type 2 diabetes.
In a controlled research trial, PCRM president Neal D. Barnard,
M.D., and colleagues are comparing the diet to the more typical
diet recommendations made by the American Diabetes Association.
The study began in late 2003 and will continue until 2006. The
106 participants are randomly assigned one of the diets and attend
weekly meetings for support and diet instruction. The research team
is tracking the effect of the diets on glucose control, cholesterol,
blood pressure, and other factors. Also involved in the study are
researchers from the George Washington University and the University
of Toronto.
PCRM conducted a similar study
in the late 1990s which found that a vegetarian diet reduced or
eliminated the need for medicines in two-thirds of the study participants.
Those results were published in the August 1999 edition of Preventive
Medicine.
