PCRM Public Service Announcements Reach Wide Audience

PCRM’s message of good nutrition has probably been in a newspaper, on a television broadcast, or on the radio airwaves near you. PCRM’s public service announcements (PSAs), which are designed to educate consumers about different aspects of nutrition and health, have been picked up by publications, radio stations, and television stations across the country.

The television PSA “Dangerous” warns parents about the problems associated with poor childhood nutrition and the potential health problems an obese child may face later in life. It features PCRM president Neal Barnard, M.D., along with PCRM member doctors Ana Negron, Carol Tavani, and Milton Mills. This PSA has aired more than 4,000 times on broadcast stations in 88 cities and 37 states for free, at an estimated worth of almost $1 million. It has also aired more than 7,300 times on 72 cable stations, including twice on CNN in the last month.

Another PSA dedicated to childhood obesity has just begun airing nationally on broadcast stations. This spot also features real-life PCRM doctors who come to the rescue of customers at a typical fast-food restaurant by replacing the greasy, high-fat fare with fruits and vegetables.

The Cancer Project has also had great success in getting out its message through PSAs. This summer, The Cancer Project released television, radio, and print PSAs that educate the public about the relationship between diet and cancer prevention. After just one month, “Powerful Weapon” had played 371 times on 42 stations. The radio version has been heard almost 7,000 times, and the related print PSA, called “Prescription for Health,” has reached a circulation of more than 5 million.
