It’s hard to pick up a newspaper without seeing another scary headline about diabetes. Last month, the American Diabetes Association released a report showing that America is spending at least $174 billion a year treating the disease. That’s about as much as the country currently spends on the war in Iraq and the global war on terrorism.

Neal Barnard, M.D.Just a few weeks later, the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute brought a dramatic halt to part of a large government diabetes study—Action to Control Cardiovascular Risk in Diabetes—because of 257 unexpected deaths. The British government has tightened restrictions on Avandia, a drug that has been linked to heart problems, and the U.S. government may be forced to follow suit.

It’s clear that a drug-focused approach to type 2 diabetes is not enough. As PCRM's president Neal Barnard, M.D., wrote in a recent op-ed, the scientific community is looking for answers in all the wrong places. More than ever, public health officials need to stop pushing drugs and surgery and start promoting healthy diets.

To help educate the public, Dr. Barnard is taking his successful Reverse Diabetes Tour back on the road this month. The tour, which has so far visited more than 40 cities around the United States, introduces people to the simple and powerful effect of a low-fat vegan diet.

Dr. Barnard will visit Greenville, S.C., on Wednesday, March 12, and Charlotte, N.C., on Thursday, March 13. Each of the lectures is free and open to the public.

Dr. Barnard will present findings from his government-funded research that shows a low-fat vegan diet controls type 2 diabetes more effectively than the standard diabetes diet or oral medications. As Dr. Barnard says, “The safest approach to diabetes and other diet-related diseases is a dietary approach.”

If you live in North Carolina or South Carolina, we hope to see you at the lecture. If not, please visit our Web site at www.pcrm.org/diabetes to view some of Dr. Barnard’s many lectures on diabetes online.

Note: Dr. Barnard’s Program for Reversing Diabetes will be out in paperback this April.
