March of Dimes Sponsor PackMost businesses that support the March of Dimes (MOD) have no idea about the kinds of cruel and unnecessary animal experiments that the MOD funds. So PCRM has created a booklet to inform MOD sponsors about those experiments and to provide a list of alternative charities that have received the Humane Charity Seal of Approval.

The MOD has been funneling money toward cruel and unnecessary animal experiments for years. The MOD does not report how much money goes toward these experiments, but estimates based on funding summaries are about $10 million a year.

In perhaps the most well-known of the MOD’s experiments, kittens’ eyes were sewn shut for months, after which they were killed in an effort to show how blindness affects visual development. The results had no relevance to human neurological function. Other experiments have included injecting rats with cocaine and severely dehydrating pregnant sheep to monitor the developmental impact on the fetus.
Once sponsors learn about the animal experiments funded by the March of Dimes and the public disapproval of this activity, some end their March of Dimes sponsorship or restrict their donations to only non-animal programs.

Please give a sponsor pack to local businesses that financially support the March of Dimes and ask them to select another charity to sponsor until the MOD changes its standards. Birth defects charities that do not experiment on animals include Easter Seals, Birth Defect Research for Children, the Spina Bifida Association of America, and the Little People’s Research Fund Inc.
