Two New Medical Charities Earn Humane Seal

PCRM’s campaign to promote cruelty-free medical charities is growing in scope and influence. Launched just a few years ago, the Humane Charity Seal of Approval has now been awarded to more than 200 charities that fund vital patient services or life-saving medical research, but never animal experiments.

Like the “cruelty-free” symbols found on many cosmetics, the Humane Seal consists of a circular logo and the outline of a rabbit. The seal’s simplicity makes it easy for donors to quickly determine if a charity matches their values.

The latest two charities to earn the seal are Save A Child’s Heart Foundation and Recovery Path Foundation. One of the largest organizations of its kind, Save A Child’s Heart Foundation provides urgently needed pediatric heart surgery and follow-up care for children from third world and developing countries. Based in Florida, Recovery Path Foundation provides medical services for people dealing with both substance abuse and eating disorders.

PCRM recently learned that a generous (and anonymous) donor has chosen two charities for her living trust—valued between $2.6 and $4 million—in part because they carry the Humane Seal.

The Humane Seal is available to any health charity that can guarantee it doesn’t fund or conduct animal tests, as defined by the Council on Humane Giving. The program is administered by PCRM on behalf of the Council, a consortium of public interest and animal protection groups. Because PCRM administers the Seal as a public service, there is no fee for applying for or using the Seal.
