Something Fishy at the USDA
Every five years, the federal government undertakes one of the
most contentious projects imaginable when it revises the Dietary
Guidelines for Americans, the primary source of nutrition advice
in the U.S.
Unfortunately, the process is usually hijacked by the meat, dairy,
sugar, and other junk-food industries, which exert tremendous influence
over the federal government. This time around, the fish industry
is getting into the act. Despite overwhelming evidence that many
fish now contain unsafe levels of mercury and other neurotoxins—as
well as unhealthful levels of fat and animal protein—the committee
revising the guidelines is seriously considering adding fish to
the list of recommended foods.
A major stakeholder in the revision process, PCRM is working hard
to persuade the committee that the guidelines should not include
fish, or any other animal products. Read more about PCRM’s
position and send a
letter with your own recommendations.
