Dietary Guidelines for Americans 2000
The Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee (the "Committee") members were selected between September 1997, when the Notice for Invitations for Appointment to the Committee was published, and August 1998, when the list of Committee appointees was announced. Based on the Committee members' curriculum vitae and despite the fact that additional information remains concealed by the United States Department of Agriculture ("USDA"), the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine has learned that some members have the following industry ties: Cutberto Garza, Chair 1987. Visiting Professor with the National Dairy Council. The National Dairy Council conducts and funds research on the role of milk nutrients in health and diet. The National Dairy Council is a division of Dairy Management Inc., a domestic and international planning and management organization responsible for increasing demand for dairy products and for providing the best possible economic advantage to American dairy farmers. Dairy Management Inc. manages the American Dairy Association, the National Dairy Council, and the U.S. Dairy Export Council. 1995. Dr. Garza organized a nutrition research symposium in conjunction with, sponsored by, and funded by Mead Johnson Nutritionals, a subsidiary of Bristol-Myers Squibb. Mead Johnson sells and promotes primarily dairy-based products. Mead Johnson is a participant in the infant rebate system of the federal Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC). As a participant, Mead Johnson contracts with various states which administer the WIC program to provide its infant formula to WIC benefit recipients. In 1998, Mead Johnson was the largest provider of infant formula to WIC. 1996. Dr. Garza organized a symposium in conjunction with, sponsored by, and funded by the Nestle Company. The Nestle Company produces dairy-based infant formulas and cereals, condensed milk, and ice cream. 1997-1998. Dr. Garza received income in an unknown amount, but in excess of $10,000, for serving on the editorial board of Nestle Annales, a pediatric journal created and funded by the Nestle Company. 1997-present. Dr. Garza has served as the scientific advisory on the Board of Directors of the Dannon Research Institute, Inc. The Institute is funded by and affiliated with Dannon Company, Inc., best known for its dairy yogurt products. Richard Deckelbaum 1986-1998. Invited lecturer by the Nestle Research Center, affiliated with the Nestle Company. The Nestle Company produces dairy-based infant formulas and cereals, condensed milk, and ice cream. 1989-1992. Received research grant funding from the National Dairy Promotion and Research Board. The National Dairy Promotion and Research Board, funded by milk producers, administers a coordinated program of promotion, research, and nutrition education to strengthen the dairy industry's position in domestic and foreign markets. 1992. Published an Invited Paper as part of the Nestle Nutrition Workshop Series, which the Nestle Company created and funded. The Nestle Company produces dairy-based infant formulas and cereals, condensed milk, and ice cream. 1994-1995. Received grant support from the National Live Stock and Meat Board, now known as the National Cattlemen's Beef Association. This trade association represents beef producers, meat packers, and food retailers and wholesalers. 1997-present. Served as chairman of the Board of Trustees for the SlimFast Nutrition Institute, established by the SlimFast Foods Company. The SlimFast Foods Company produces dairy-based products. 1998-present. Received unrestricted grant support from Bristol-Myers Squibb/Mead Johnson. Mead Johnson is a subsidiary of Bristol-Myers Squibb. Mead Johnson sells and promotes dairy-based products. Unidentified date. Received a $500,000 grant from Bristol-Myers Squibb/Mead Johnson. Mead Johnson is a subsidiary of Bristol-Myers Squibb. Mead Johnson sells and promotes dairy-based products. Scott Grundy 1973-present. Serves on the American Egg Board Grant Review Committee. The Board, funded by egg producers, has as its mission increasing markets for eggs, egg products, and spent fowl products through promotion, research, and education. Johanna Dwyer 1990-1993. Served on the grant review committee for the American Meat Institute. The American Meat Institute is a national trade organization representing packers and processors of 70 percent of U.S. beef, pork, lamb, veal, and turkey products and their suppliers. 1990-1993. Served on the National Dairy Board, which, in 1994, merged with the United Dairy Industry Association to form Dairy Management Inc., a domestic and international planning and management organization responsible for increasing demand for dairy products and for providing the best possible economic advantage to American dairy farmers. Dairy Management Inc. manages the American Dairy Association, the National Dairy Council, and the U.S. Dairy Export Council. 1990-1995. Dr. Dwyer participated in a visiting professorship program sponsored by the National Dairy Council. The National Dairy Council conducts and funds research on the role of milk nutrients in health and diet. Eileen Kennedy Dr. Kennedy was not formerly a Committee member but is employed by the USDA as Deputy Under Secretary of Agriculture for Research, Education, and Economics and participated in Committee meetings. Dr. Kennedy serves as a scientific advisor on the Board of Directors of the Dannon Research Institute, Inc. The Dannon Research Institute is funded and affiliated with Dannon Company, Inc., best known for its dairy yogurt products.
