Doctors Rank Ten Worst New Low-Carb Entrées
Chicken-Smothered Salads and Bunless Burgers Top the List with
Excessive Calories and Artery-Clogging Fat
WASHINGTON—In a new report,
nutrition professionals with the Physicians Committee for Responsible
Medicine (PCRM) have analyzed low-carb entrées from ten restaurant
chains, finding that even items marketed as “smart eating”
contain an excess of calories and dangerous amounts of fat. The
ten most unhealthful entrées are ranked in order of worst
to least bad. Ruby Tuesday’s Spring Chicken Salad tops the
list with 1,161 waist-expanding calories and 98 grams of fat. Subway’s
Atkins-friendly Chicken Bacon Ranch Wrap, which derives more than
half of its calories from fat, is number ten on the list. See chart
below for the complete list of rankings.
“With the introduction of these fat-laden, high-calorie menu
items, carbophobia is clearly overtaking common sense,” says
Amy Joy Lanou, Ph.D., nutrition director for PCRM. “A recent
study shows that even one fatty meal can increase your risk of a
cardiovascular event in the period immediately following the meal.
A low-fat diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and complex carbohydrates
is by far the safest and simplest approach to weight loss and long-term
good health.”
