Mark Kennedy, Esq.
Mark Kennedy is
associate general counsel for the Physicians Committee
for Responsible Medicine (PCRM), a nationwide organization of physicians
and laypersons that promotes preventive medicine, especially good
nutrition, and addresses controversies in modern medicine, including
ethical issues in research.
As associate general counsel, Mr. Kennedy helps shape the legal efforts pursued by PCRM. He supports PCRM’s advocacy litigation, which challenges industry and government when they promote the consumption of meat and dairy products and other unhealthy foods, and helps originate litigation to promote plant-based diets as well as alternatives to the use of animals in experiments and education.
Two of Mr. Kennedy’s most important cases for PCRM are groundbreaking lawsuits against national restaurant chains for their failure to warn consumers of carcinogens in their food products and against the drug company Merck for its negligent reliance on animal testing results to market and sell the dangerous drug Vioxx.
Mr. Kennedy’s caseload also includes two lawsuits against the Regents of the University of California: one to end the unlawful use of state funds for animal experiments that violate the federal Animal Welfare Act, and the other to compel the University of California to comply with the California Public Records Act by releasing records on animal welfare and animal experiments conducted at its campuses. Mr. Kennedy assists with PCRM’s petitions to federal agencies, including PCRM’s successful effort to halt misleading advertising linking consumption of dairy products to weight loss.
Mr. Kennedy received a Bachelor of Science in computer science from the University of Virginia. He received his law degree from Washington and Lee University, where he served as the executive editor of the Washington and Lee Race and Ethnic Ancestry Law Journal and received the Virginia State Bar’s Oliver White Hill Law Student Pro Bono Award.
Mr. Kennedy is a member of the New York and District of Columbia Bars and has been admitted to the United States District Court for the District of Columbia.
