Megha Shah Even, M.S., is a toxicology and research consultant with the Physicians
Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM), a nationwide organization
of physicians and laypersons that promotes preventive medicine,
especially good nutrition, and addresses controversies in modern
medicine, including ethical issues in research.
As a toxicology and research consultant, Ms. Even promotes alternatives to the use of
animals in research and develops alternative methods, including
the world’s first cruelty-free and animal serum-free insulin
assay. Ms. Even has presented her work on the assay at the Biological
Assay Development and Validation Conference, the Federation of
American Societies for Experimental Biology 2005 Conference, and
the Fifth World Congress on Alternatives and Animal Use in the
Life Sciences Conference in Berlin, Germany. The assay is now manufactured,
marketed, and sold by Linco Research, Inc.
Ms. Even initiated PCRM’s Alternatives in Science Education
campaign to promote alternatives to animal dissection to students
and educators. In addition, she has worked with medical students
and community members around the country to end the use of live
animal laboratories in medical school education and trauma training
courses for physicians.
Ms. Even has prepared and submitted toxicological test plan comments
regarding various chemicals in the Environmental Protection Agency’s
High Production Volume Challenge Program. One of Ms. Even’s main
responsibilities is to work with government agencies and other
institutions to reduce and eliminate animal testing for regulatory
purposes.
Ms. Even graduated with a Master of Science in Biological Sciences
from the George Washington University in Washington, D.C. During
her graduate research work, Ms. Even specialized in developmental biology
and immunology. She also worked as a teaching assistant, planning
and giving weekly lectures for an introductory biology laboratory
course. Ms. Even received her undergraduate degree in biochemistry
and cell biology from the University of California at San Diego
in La Jolla, California.
Before entering graduate school, Ms. Even served as a National Service
Volunteer with AmeriCorps in Charleston, S.C. There
she participated in a residential community service program that
involved the implementation of an afterschool reading program,
building houses with Habitat for Humanity, and work on a wetlands
restoration project with local nongovernmental organizations.
