New Column: “Beyond Animal Research”
Given the growing concern worldwide about the ethical and scientific problems with animal experiments, PCRM is pleased to announce a new monthly column on the topic. Jonathan Balcombe, Ph.D., a British-based research consultant who promotes alternatives to animal experiments, is penning a monthly piece for PCRM’s Web site.
An ethologist, Balcome has just completed two major scientific reviews for PCRM, both on the pain and distress that even routine lab experiments cause animals. The first paper is scheduled for publication this November in Contemporary Topics in Laboratory Animal Science.
Balcombe is the author of The Use of Animals in Higher Education, as well as many articles on humane life science education and scientific papers on animal behavior. He was formerly an associate director with The Humane Society of the United States and research coordinator with Immersion Medical, a medical simulation company.
