pigVictory! Pigs Saved in Canada
2010 is already shaping up to be a winning year for PCRM’s campaign to end animal use in Advanced Trauma Life Support programs. Last month, Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario, announced that it stopped using live pigs in its trauma training program. Because of PCRM’s efforts, the university will instead use the TraumaMan System simulator. Save Pigs in Massachusetts >

Dean Ornish, M.D.Doctors Ornish and McDougall Speak at ‘Vital Signs’ Continuing Education Event
The World Health Organization proclaimed 2008 the International Year of the Potato. Maybe that’s because starchy foods can help prevent more deaths in one year than all of the antibiotics, diabetic pills, statins, and blood pressure pills prescribed over the past half century, according to John A. McDougall, M.D. Health professionals can hear more about Dr. McDougall’s research on plant-based diets for disease prevention and management at the Vital Signs: Plant-Based Diets in Clinical Practice event. military medicCitizen Lobbyists Urge Congress to End Military's Use of Animals
Many of you joined PCRM’s Citizen Lobbyist Week in January. You met with U.S. representatives and asked them to support the Battlefield Excellence through Superior Training Practices Act. Now it has 25 congressional co-sponsors. This bill would help the U.S. military modernize its medical training methods by phasing in human-based methods in place of live animals. But your continued grassroots activism is needed to enlist more co-sponsors. Congressional Briefing Today >

Bill MaherTalk Show Host Bill Maher Asks NASA to Halt Monkey Experiment Plan
The new season of Real Time with Bill Maher starts later this month. On the show, political satirist Maher discusses hot-button topics with unflinching honesty. Last month, he was equally candid when he made a lifesaving request to NASA. He wrote and asked the space agency to halt its plan to spend $1.75 million to blast live squirrel monkeys with dangerous levels of radiation. Electric Shocks >

Alicia SilverstoneSublime Vegan Cookbooks Top PCRM’s Best Cookbooks List
Vegan cookbooks The Kind Diet by Alicia Silverstone and The Conscious Cook by Tal Ronnen were recent New York Times best-sellers. Like Nanci Alexander’s The Sublime Restaurant Cookbook and others that topped PCRM’s best cookbooks list, the popularity of these books shows that Americans want to improve their diets to fight obesity and other chronic diseases.
