PCRM Members Share Their Passion for Compassion
PCRM members celebrated their commitment to promoting compassion at the Passion for Compassion luncheon and live auction, which raised funds for PCRM’s vital programs. Actress Marilu Henner, best known for her roles on Taxi and Evening Shade, was a special guest at the February 12 event held at The Hotel Casa del Mar in Santa Monica, Calif.
The lunch and auction raised money to support PCRM’s efforts to promote vegetarian diets and alternatives to animal experiments. Participants were treated to a cocktail reception on the beachfront terrace and a gourmet vegan lunch created by renowned chef Eric Tucker of the Millennium restaurant in San Francisco.
PCRM President Dr. Neal Barnard, Henner, and PCRM’s director of research and toxicology, Chad Sandusky, Ph.D., hosted a live auction that gave members the chance to support their favorite PCRM program. The auction hosts described the eight PCRM programs that the auction would be supporting: the campaign to end animal labs in medical schools, The Cancer Survivor’s Handbook distribution, humane charity seal advertisements, healthy school lunch programs, Spanish Vegetarian Starter Kits, the dissection alternatives campaign, the NutritionMD.org Web site, and the distribution of the Nutrition Guide for Clinicians.
The winner of each item will have their name associated with the program that they bid on for an entire year.
Henner spoke to the attendees about her enthusiasm for nutrition. “My greatest passion is health, so I’m so thrilled to be here,” Henner said. The actress said she has been talking about healthy eating for years and recalled the times when she talked about the negative health effects of dairy products on The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson.
“Vegetarian food is sexy and vibrant,” Henner said. “You have to change your palette to eat healthy, and changing your palette changes your life.”
