Milk Study Makes a Splash
PCRM made headlines in early March with a surprising new review
showing that dairy products do not improve children’s bone
health. The study appeared in the March issue of Pediatrics, a leading
peer-reviewed medical journal.

PCRM’s senior nutrition scientist Amy Joy Lanou, Ph.D., and
co-authors Neal Barnard, M.D, and Susan Berkow, Ph.D., C.N.S., presented
their findings at a news conference at Washington’s National
Press Club on March 7. Also speaking at the press briefing was Tom
Lloyd, Ph.D., a nutrition researcher from Pennsylvania State University,
who has shown that exercise, not dairy products, is the key to bone
health.
The media coverage was enormous. CNN, CBS, MSNBC, CBC, Associated
Press, Reuters, the Washington Post, dozens of newspapers, and hundreds
of TV stations all reported on the study, helping correct the long-standing
myth that bone health depends on milk.
