JUST THE FACTS…
FDA:
Milk Cannot Be Labeled “Hormone-Free” ’Cause There
Ain’t No Such Animal
Milk producers have been warned. Letters from the FDA instructed
four milk manufacturers to remove labels implying their products
are free of hormones. Milk, ice cream, and all dairy products contain
hormones that cannot be removed through any amount of processing.
I’ll Have What the Mouse Is Having
Although President Bush was apparently unaware of it, Bangkok city
officials reportedly used mice to test for poison before serving
dinner to Bush and the other world leaders attending the recent
summit there. In cruel and unscientific tests, the officials fed
and injected the food into mice, looking for ill effects.
Pizza Hut Cuts the Cheese
In the fast-food industry—where bigger often equals better—at
least one restaurant realizes that, sometimes, less is more. Pizza
Hut’s new Fit ’N Delicious pizza has half the cheese
of its original thin crust variety, cutting the fat content by 25
percent. Now, if they’d leave it off entirely, we’d
be getting somewhere. Pizza Hut was also the first pizza chain to
serve up a pizza with soy cheese.
Skip the Milk Chocolate—Go for the Dark
As reported in the journal Nature, researchers analyzed blood samples
from volunteers after they consumed dark chocolate, milk chocolate,
and dark chocolate along with milk. One hour later, the dark chocolate
significantly increased antioxidant levels. Milk, however, seems
to interfere with antioxidant absorption, rendering milk chocolate
powerless against disease.
