Physician Profile: Carolina Amador, M.D.

Dr. AmadorPCRM physician Carolina Amador, M.D., is co-chairperson of the Benton County Weight & Lifestyle Coalition in Oregon, creating programs—such as Walk to School Day—to help citizens live longer, healthier lives. As a pediatrician, she has the advantage of counseling new parents about nutrition right from the start. “Parents are becoming more inquisitive about the effects of food and environment on their children,” she says. “It’s a perfect opportunity to teach.”

Dr. Amador speaks to community groups such as Head Start, explaining how optimal nutrition facilitates the learning process. Her expertise also touches lives beyond U.S. borders. “I have worked in Uganda, Honduras, Ecuador, and other developing nations. Sharing our knowledge advances health care around the world. Something as simple as breastfeeding can vastly improve the health of a child—even into his or her adult years,” she says. Dr. Amador plans to take the Tropical Medicine Boards this year and continue working on behalf of growing families.

A strong ethical sense has guided Dr. Amador throughout her career. As a medical student, she chose not to participate in the live animal laboratory—an exercise that has since been eliminated from the curriculum at her school.
