Just the Facts...
Whoppers
of Mass Destruction
Burger King has introduced the bunless Whopper, hoping to keep low-carb
dieters loyal. The new sandwich ranks among the worst new restaurant
menu additions, with 38 grams of fat, 85 grams of cholesterol, and
590 grams of sodium. Our advice: Have a BK Veggie instead. If you
hold that mayo, it’s got less than 10 grams of fat.
Measuring Risk
Diabetes risk can be estimated with a simple tape measure and a
blood test. Researchers from the Centers for Disease Control and
Prevention measured the waist size and blood fat levels of 9,183
adults. Those with the highest scores on both accounts were three
times more likely to have diabetes.

Mice
Tests Mislead MS Researchers
University of Sydney researchers report that multiple sclerosis
(MS) may be due to the death of brain cells that produce the myelin
sheath surrounding nerve cells—not attacks from the patient’s
immune system as previously indicated by animal studies. The first
hypothesis was largely based on perceived similarities between MS
and an artificially induced condition in animals called Experimental
Allergic Encephalitis. Neurology experts say the animal model was
so inappropriate that it delayed progress in MS research. New human
studies may now provide the breakthrough that MS patients have been
waiting for.

Growing
the Next Generation of Couch Potatoes
The more children watch TV, the less likely they are to eat fruits
and vegetables, say researchers from the Harvard School of Public
Health. Obviously, they aren’t watching PCRM’s Food
for Life, which debuted on WISDOM Television in February 2004.
