Medical Schools in Poland End Dog LabsIn a move
that will likely influence other schools in Eastern Europe, the Medical Academy of Warsaw
and the University of Poznan have eliminated their live dog laboratories. They will be
replaced with high-tech computer programs, providing a more relevant, efficient, and
humane teaching method. Since 1994, PCRM staff has been working with the Polish Fundacja
Animals to encourage the use of alternative methods and locate appropriate software. In
the spring of 1995, PCRMs Director of Research met with the Fundacja Animals in
Warsaw to offer direct assistance in this impressive effort.
Professors Kazimierz Ziemnicki of Poznan and Andrzej Trzebski of Warsaw are so
enthusiastic about the new non-animal methods that they are planning a conference for
medical schools throughout Eastern Europe to focus on implementing non-animal methods. |
