The Women's Intervention Nutrition Study (WINS) and the role of a low-fat diet in breast cancer recurrence
Speaker: Rowan Chlebowski, M.D., Ph.D., professor of medicine at David Geffen School of Medicine at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) and chief of the Division of Medical Oncology and Hematology Harbor at the UCLA Medical Center.
Synopsis: Dr. Chlebowski will discuss the results of his Women's Intervention Nutrition Study (WINS), which evaluated the role of a low-fat diet in breast cancer recurrence, along with his overall research on women's health, breast cancer, and hormonal mediation of cancer and cancer prevention.
Intended Audience: Internists, oncologists, registered dieticians, registered nurses, and cancer researchers.
Objectives: Upon completion of attending this presentation, participants should:
- Understand the updated results from the Women’s Intervention Nutrition Study (WINS), which evaluates a lifestyle intervention targeting fat intake reduction and breast cancer recurrence risk.
- Be familiar with results from the Women’s Health Initiative (WHI DM) trial evaluating the effect of a lifestyle intervention on breast cancer incidence in postmenopausal women with a prior cancer diagnosis.
- Be able to describe the significance of randomized trials evaluating lifestyle interventions on breast cancer.
Rowan T. Chlebowski, M.D., Ph.D.
Rowan T. Chlebowski, M.D., Ph.D., is chief of the Division of Medical Oncology and Hematology at the Harbor-UCLA Medical Center, professor of medicine at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA, and investigator, Los Angeles Biomedical Research Institute, Torrance, Calif.
Dr. Chlebowski received his M.D. and Ph.D. from Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine in Cleveland, and is board certified in internal medicine and oncology. He trained as a fellow in medical oncology at the University of Southern California, Los Angeles. Dr. Chlebowski serves as a Women’s Health Initiative representative to the National Cancer Institute Cohort Consortium and serves on the steering committees for multiple studies focused on breast cancer and women’s health.
Dr. Chlebowski’s major research interests include breast cancer prevention and treatment. His work has been published extensively in major journals, including the New England Journal of Medicine, Journal of the American Medical Association, Lancet, Journal of National Cancer Institute, and the Journal of Clinical Oncology. His recent presentations include plenary presentations in both 2005 and 2006 at the American Society of Clinical Oncology Annual Meeting.
